Are Pediatric Dentists Different Than General Dentists?

Everyone knows that oral health is important, especially during the developmental years of childhood! However, most parents are unsure of what kind of dentist they should take their children to, a general dentist or pediatric dentist. The truth is, they are both experts on teeth and oral health, yet…

Pediatric Dentists Do 2-3 Years of Specialized Training After Dental School!

To become a general dentist, it typically requires about four years of education beyond a bachelor’s degree, including dental school, residencies, and licensing. What 53% of parents don’t realize is that pediatric dentists are required to do an additional two or three years of specialized training on top of that. Childhood is an important time in a patient’s life, particularly relating to their oral health. This extra training gives pediatrics dentists, such as Dr. Casey, the resources to treat the needs of smaller, more sensitive patients. It covers how to treat various issues in a child’s developing mouth, as well as child behavior, physical growth, and overall child development. This training also includes learning how to work with dental patients who have special needs as well.

Pediatric Dental Offices Are Designed For Children

Every aspect of our office, like many pediatric dental offices, is designed with your child in mind. When we say every aspect, we mean every aspect! Even the tools and dental devices used in-office are designed for the mouths of children.  At Cowabunga Kids Dentistry, our patients are given toys and video games to keep their little minds occupied while they wait for their dental appointment to begin. We even have their favorite TV show playing above their heads as our staff and Dr. Casey work on their teeth. We are serious when we say that our office was designed with our little patients in mind.

Pediatric Dental Offices Are More Likely To Be Anxiety-Free

General dentists deal with patients of all ages, many of whom are able to self-regulate their nervous systems, as well as soothe any dental anxiety they experience. Pediatric dentists know that many children aren’t capable of doing that on their own. For this reason, our office is designed to limit as much anxiety as possible. In fact, our goal is to make every visit as enjoyable and relaxing as a day on the beach! We work with each individual patient at a pace that is comfortable to them. Our staff is very talented in helping children ease their fears and create lasting positive experiences that they enjoy.

Choosing a dentist for your child is an important part of their lifelong oral and overall health! Jump starting their dental experiences with a fun, loving pediatric dentist is always a great option for children of all ages. Dr. Casey and the staff at Cowabunga Kids Dentistry go above and beyond to ensure each child has a wonderful experience. We take the time to explain each part of the treatment so our patients feel safe and comfortable.
